So, here's another random rant journal for once! And this time, I'm going to rant about the new Pokemon movie that aired on Cartoon Network, Pokemon: Kyurem & The Sword of Justice.
It's a tradition among Pokemon movies to receive pretty bad rating from critics, but sometimes good reviews from the fans. As the years went by, the movies, while still badly received by the critics, were getting much better in the eyes of the fans. The stories were getting better, the star Pokemon for the films were decent, and overall, they were MUCH better than the first few movies.
We are currently in the 5th Generation of Pokemon, and to celebrate that, two separate movies were made and released, both called, "White: Victini & Zekrom", and "Black: Victini & Reshiram."
They aired late last year, and were received well by the fans.
But in all honesty, I didn't really like them. Why? Because the side characters were monotonous, the story was uninspiring, except for the small, uninteresting plot point, in which Ash tells Victini "Imma take you one day tu da ocean!", plus the whole "move the sword back to it's rightful place" ended in almost destroying the town, and he moved the whole entire monument with VICTINI. Yeah, how stupid does that sound?
I would keep ranting on, but I just wanted to tell y'all this. I didn't like the two movies.
So, now we come to this movie. Kyurem & The Sword of Justice. Starring the Pokemon, Cobalion, Virizion, Terrakion, Keldeo, and Kyurem.
So, what do I think of this movie? Well, before I say, let me tell you the positives of this movie that I really liked.
Well, of course, I like Kyurem. Kyurem was a really good star Pokemon. It just screamed "badass" the moment it came on-screen, and even if it didn't really do much, it did enough to be a part of the movie. Plus, it's voice actor is BOSS.
I liked Keldo as well. It at first comes off as annoying, but as the movie progresses, we see it as it tries hard to conquer it's fear of Kyurem, and keep on fighting until the very end. And even after gaining it's Resolute Form, it still loses to Kyurem, which I thought was a nice little twist, since I was expecting Keldeo to defeat Kyurem. Overall, another good star Pokemon.
Another thing I like about this movie, which also applies to previous movies as well, are the backgrounds. They are gorgeously detailed, and it's a shame that they aren't seen for very long. As an artist, I love the work they put in to make even the simplest of backgrounds.
With many Pokemon games and movies, the soundtrack was good as well. There were times that the music would immediately kick in for intense situations, and it payed at the right times. Though not as good as some other soundtracks from previous movies, it's still kickass.
So yeah, those are the positives I have about this movie, and now comes the negatives of this movie.
The Musketeer Trio are NOT IMPORTANT IN ANY WAY IN THIS MOVIE. You see them practicing with Keldeo, they follow Keldeo to Kyurem's lair, get frozen, and are unseen through almost half of the movie, until the very end of the movie. But even then, they don't DO ANYTHING. They just watch on the sidelines. "Nope, don't help Keldeo, it can do fine without us." Out of all the star Pokemon I've seen so far, these three are the worst.
As expected with every movie, the voice acting is either sub-par, or just plain bad. And this brings us back to the Musketeer Trio. Their voices are TERRIBLE. Virizion sounds TOO much like a woman, Terrakion sounds like an old dude with alzheimer's, and Cobalion.. sound's decent enough, but still sounds sub-par at best. Even if I did like Keldeo, it's voice is the same actor who voiced Ed from the Full Metal Alchemist series, and his performance here is also terrible. The only good actor was Kyurem.
The story. My god the story. Nothing interesting happens in this movie. It's a basic cat chases mouse story, where Kyurem is tracking down Keldeo to finish their battle. The rest of the film is of Ash and co. trying to get away from Kyurem. That's all there is to know people. And what sad is, even though I stated above that the Zekrom/Reshiram movies had a bad story, I find it's story BETTER THOUGHT OF than this one. Seriously....
And.... that's pretty much all I need to say.
So! What is my conclusion for this movie?
Well, it's decent. Even if it's story is non-existent, the Musketeer Trio are useless, and the voice acting is bad, I will say I find it a better movie than the Zekrom/Reshiram movies, though not by very much. What drew me into this movie was Kyurem, since I am a big fan of it, and even Kyurem itself didn't disappoint me.
And that's about it folks! I hoped you liked my rant!
(Kyurem was the only enjoyable thing in it, when he's not sounding like Darth Vader, he sounds drunk and high.)
Well the actual movie wasn't released in theaters. It aired on Cartoon Network. xD
When they mix pokemon and weapons, that a sure sign that pokemon is either running out of ideas or it going down hill for good.
They create an energy sword from their head, which is a move called Sacred Sword. [link]
